Taxpayers can e-file their federal tax returns earlier than the official opening of the tax filing season at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Taxpayers can get a head start on preparing their tax returns as free federal tax preparation and e-filing software is now available at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile to all Americans with a 2024 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less. Powered by The Free File Alliance, a coalition of 8 industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Free File program gives eligible taxpayers free access to the industry’s most innovative and secure tax software in order to easily prepare and e-file their federal tax returns. In many instances, taxpayers will also have the option of simultaneously filing their state income tax return for free.

Free File members for tax-filing season 2025 are:  1040Now, Inc.; 1040.com (Drake); ezTaxReturn.com (English and Spanish); FileYourTaxes.com; On-Line Taxes (OLT.com); TaxAct; TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA); and TaxSlayer.

Eligible taxpayers can get a head start on their taxes by e-filing utilizing the Free File software. More than 70 percent of all taxpayers — approximately 100 million people — are eligible to use Free File, which is available now at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile.  Taxpayers can visit www.IRS.gov/FreeFile to find free federal return options that match their situation.

Taxpayers can also use their smart phones or tablets to electronically prepare and file their federal and state tax returns through IRS Free File. Taxpayers may access the products using mobile devices in two ways: (1) Use the IRS2Go app, which has a link to the Free File Software Lookup Tool or (2) use the device’s browser to go to www.IRS.gov/FreeFile. The IRS2Go app is available for Android and iOS devices.

“If your income is $84,000 or less, Free File is there to take the guesswork out of doing your federal tax returns,” said Tim Hugo, Executive Director of the Free File Alliance. “Our members’ software offers step-by-step help to get your federal taxes done quickly, safely, and securely–and for free.”

Hugo continued, “Even taxpayers with small businesses, gig income, and rental homes can use Free File as long as their AGI is $84,000 or below.  Many taxpayers believe that Free File is only for the simplest returns, but that is simply not true.  Even with a more complicated tax return, you can use the IRS Free File Program.”

The Free File Alliance and its members continue to make a priority the protection of taxpayers’ personal information through their participation in the IRS Security Summit Initiative.  The Alliance and its members, along with the IRS, state tax agencies and others in the tax industry, are active participants in the Security Summit in order to provide additional identity theft safeguards for tax filing.  To learn more about the Security Awareness campaign, visit the IRS webpage at: Taxes, Security, Together.

Hugo continued, “The Free File program has provided over 75 million returns valued at an estimated $3 billion in free tax software over the last 23 years, and we hope to see even more taxpayers take advantage of the service in 2025. IRS.gov/FreeFile is the one place where taxpayers can choose from a variety of the industry’s most innovative and secure tax software options.”

Starting January 27, 2025 basic federal e-filing services, called Free File Fillable Forms, will also be available regardless of income level. Free File Fillable Forms allow taxpayers who are familiar with tax law and need no preparation assistance to complete and file their federal income tax return electronically.

By making industry-leading tax software available at no cost to prepare the return, Free File has introduced millions of Americans, many of whom could not otherwise afford tax software, to the efficiency and ease of e-filing. The program has continually advanced the IRS’ e-filing initiative, while meeting a critical need for affordable, quality tax software options. Responding to a 2024 survey, over 98 percent of users said they would use the IRS Free File program again.

Remember, the best way to access Free File and its free federal tax return preparation options is by visiting IRS Free File.

Dr. van Belle to guide scientific exploration and foster innovation in the next era of astronomical research

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Jan. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Lowell Observatory is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gerard van Belle as the new Director of Science. Van Belle, who has been an astronomer at the observatory since 2011, has been serving as the interim Director of Science.

In his new role, van Belle will lead a diverse team of astronomers and planetary scientists. He will spearhead the observatory’s new Science Vision, which focuses on advancing research capabilities and implementing cutting-edge technological improvements supporting Lowell’s leadership in astronomical research.

Under his leadership, the science department will continue to advance Lowell Observatory’s mission to pursue the study of astronomy, including the study of our solar system and its evolution, and to conduct pure research in astrophysical phenomena.

Van Belle’s own research focuses on fundamental stellar parameters, including the sizes, shapes, masses, distances, and temperatures of various types of stars. He is also renowned for his expertise in optical and near-infrared astronomical interferometry.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Whitman College in 1990, followed by a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1993, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wyoming in 1996.

Throughout his career, van Belle has been instrumental in the development and commissioning of major optical interferometers worldwide, including the Palomar Testbed Interferometer, the Keck Interferometer, and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. His pioneering work in stellar surface imaging earned him the inaugural Edward Stone Award for Outstanding Research Publication at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2002.

In 2011, van Belle joined Lowell Observatory’s science staff, where he applied high-resolution astronomical techniques to detect nearby exoplanets and map stellar surfaces. He served as the Director of the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) in Flagstaff, Arizona, from 2017 to 2018, and subsequently as its Chief Scientist until 2022.

Notably, van Belle was among the astronomers who voted against the definition of ‘planet’ advanced during the 2006 International Astronomical Union (IAU) conference in Prague, which relegated Pluto to being a ‘dwarf planet’ (which according to the IAU resolution is not a planet).

His extensive experience and dedication to advancing astronomical research make him a valuable leader for Lowell Observatory’s scientific endeavors.

“I am honored to take on this role at such a pivotal time for Lowell Observatory,” said van Belle. “Our Science Vision will guide us in exploring new frontiers in astronomy while strengthening our commitment to public engagement and education.”

Executive Director Dr. Amanda Bosh expressed her confidence in van Belle’s leadership: “Gerard’s extensive experience and dedication to our mission make him the ideal person to lead our scientific endeavors. I look forward to working closely with him as we embark on this exciting new chapter for Lowell Observatory.”
