Arctic Quest: 8,000-Mile Motorcycle Ride Honors Indigenous Women and Girls

Published

Our Rescue, Mental Health Tech Company and First Nations Advocate Unite to Raise Awareness and Funds for Trafficking Survivors

MINNEAPOLIS, May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — To mark National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls on May 5, Our Rescue, a global non-governmental organization dedicated to combating sex trafficking and child exploitation, is partnering with First Nations advocate Esther Howard from the Dene Nation, on an 8,000+ mile motorcycle ride. The month-long journey, named “Arctic Quest: A Ride for Her,” will raise awareness of the ongoing epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and raise funds for Our Rescue’s trauma-informed survivor care services.

Indigenous communities around the world are among the most vulnerable to human trafficking and violence. Although they represent only five percent of the global population, Indigenous peoples account for approximately 15 percent of those living in extreme poverty—a key risk factor for exploitation (United Nations, 2022). In the U.S., the crisis is acute: Four in five Native American women experience violence in their lifetime (National Institute of Justice, 2016), and a disproportionate number fall victim to trafficking. Amnesty International (2022) reports that 86 percent of perpetrators of sexual violence against Native women are non-Native men—a statistic that hasn’t changed since 2007. Yet, limited tribal jurisdiction over non-Native offenders continues to prevent many cases from ever reaching justice.

For Esther Howard, who also is the CEO and Founder of Bezyl, a mental health technology company supporting First Nations communities, this journey is deeply personal.

“My mother and grandmother survived systems of oppression and abuse that continues to today. This journey is a tribute to them—and to every Indigenous woman and child whose life deserves to be seen, honored and protected,” Howard said. “I’m on a quest to reconnect with my Indigenous roots, share our stories and bring global awareness to the Native ways of life, and everyone is invited.”

Riding for Resilience
Launching July 1, 2025, Howard and a team of riders will travel from the U.S.–Mexico border in Nogales, Arizona, to the Arctic Ocean in Tuktoyaktuk, Canada. Along the 8,000+ mile journey, they’ll raise funds for Our Rescue’s survivor care services to empower trafficking survivors on their pathways to long-term healing. Stops in Indigenous communities—including Howard’s own Arctic homeland—will offer moments of connection, healing and shared storytelling, and Our Rescue volunteers will provide support along the way.

As part of its deepening commitment to Indigenous survivor care, Our Rescue supports programs that are culturally specific and trauma informed. One of these is the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center’s Noojimo program, which provides housing, childcare, legal assistance and healing support to 75 Native American women each year as they rebuild their lives after experiencing violence.

Our Rescue also partners with and compensates Indigenous survivors who design products sold on the organization’s website, offering economic opportunity and a platform for healing through creativity. In recent years, Our Rescue has helped facilitate violence awareness trainings in the Navajo Nation’s Monument Valley, supported a coalition to unite Tribal Nations and delivered direct services to the Navajo and Ute Nations, including school clothing for kids.

Join the Ride
Riders and supporters are invited to join—whether for one day or the entire month—to learn about the Native culture. The experience will include:

Visiting Indigenous communities and learning from the strength of Indigenous women.Participating in story-sharing events.Raising awareness and funds for trafficking survivors.Experiencing the beauty of Native land and life.

The ride will follow a month-long schedule.

7.1: Depart Nogales, Arizona, at 8:00 a.m.7.6: Stop at the Calgary Stampede, Alberta.7.7: Ride overnight to Miette Hot Springs Cabins (Banff to Jasper Highway).7.10: Arrive in Whitehorse, Yukon.7.14: Stop in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.7.15: Reach the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.7.18: Riders who joined in the Yukon depart from Whitehorse.7.24: Ride through Sequoia National Park, California.7.28: Arrive in Phoenix by noon (end of the ride).

To participate in any portion of the ride, individuals must confirm their interest by June 16, 2025, by contacting Howard at esther@bezyl.com

Riders are responsible for making their own travel and lodging arrangements, as well as covering the costs associated with the ride. Howard and her team will assist with group coordination, hosts and local meetups.

Could Splight’s Technology Prevent Blackouts Like the One That Plunged 90% of Chile into Darkness?

Splight’s Dynamic Congestion Manager leverages machine learning to unlock transmission capacity while simultaneously adding to the grid a real-time, adaptive layer of protection to prevent cascading events.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On February 25th, Chile’s interconnected system experienced a rare double contingency event (N-2) in the 500 kV backbone network connecting the country’s central and northern regions. The result was a widespread blackout that left 90% of Chile’s population without power. This blackout exposed a critical operational vulnerability shared by grids around the world. These grids have had no choice but to rely on grid protection schemes based on offline models – essentially, plans built on dated information that do not reflect the real-time reality of the grid. While these static assumptions have helped to maintain grid reliability historically, the increasing complexity of the modern grid is rendering these traditional methods insufficient. Chile’s National Electricity Coordinator (CEN) concluded plainly, “This particular Automation Defense Scheme was not designed for the type of event on February 25.”

Fortunately, recent technological advancements have made possible a better alternative: a real-time assessment tool that provides protection which is orchestrated at a grid-wide level and continuously optimized based on live grid conditions.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SPLIGHT’S REAL-TIME LAYER OF PROTECTION THAT ALSO EXPANDS TRANSMISSION CAPACITY

Unlike the static, assumption-based defense schemes that many grids rely on, Splight’s Dynamic Congestion Manager (DCM) constantly monitors and controls essential system variables such as voltage, power, and frequency. The Splight DCM proactively adjusts operating parameters to prevent the grid from entering a high-risk state. In the event of an extreme contingency – or even minor one – Splight’s technology assesses how multiple variables are evolving in real-time and, with ultra-fast action responses (e.g. selective generation disconnection or reactive compensation integration), operationally repositions the grid to a safe state.

This dynamic and adaptive approach overcomes the limitations of predetermined offline schemes, which increasingly fall short of capturing the complexity and variability of real-world operating conditions.

In a case like Chile’s blackout, if a system like Splight had been deployed, it could have executed early corrective actions to maintain the interconnection between subsystems and responded to signs of overload and power oscillations on the 220 kV network. These types of protective actions, based on continuous monitoring and adaptive response, make it possible to alleviate overload and reduce instability, avoiding the disconnection of lines and the formation of islands.

Under coordination of Chile’s CEN, independent expert consultants have conducted studies of contingencies of a Level 6 classification – contingencies with a risk of total collapse. The studies concluded that prevention of Level 6 contingencies requires advanced control systems capable of real-time identification of and reaction to such critical events. Existing protection schemes were found to be significantly limited when faced with extraordinary situations, underscoring the need to build and adopt more dynamic and adaptive solutions.

Splight’s DCM technology can handle these types of critical events. By using an approach that combines real-time dynamic evaluation with existing control systems, DCM offers a modern defense to keep the grid functioning, even in the most extreme conditions.

About Splight

Founded in 2021, Splight has developed and deployed a new digital technology that utilizes real-time data streams from existing transmission assets to increase transmission capability while adding enhanced reliability to the grid. With financial backing from industry leaders, including EDP Renewables and Redeia, Splight is poised to modernize the grid. For more information, visit www.splight.com.

Modernization of Aging Infrastructure

The modernization of aging electrical infrastructure is a crucial factor driving the demand for three-phase sectionalizers. Across the globe, many countries are grappling with outdated and deteriorating power distribution networks that are prone to frequent faults and inefficiencies. These aging systems not only struggle to meet the growing energy demands but also lack the intelligence required to respond swiftly to faults and interruptions. Under the PM-WANI initiative, 200,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots have been established by May 2024. The 5G rollout, initiated in October 2022, has rapidly expanded across all states and union territories. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has bolstered domestic manufacturing, with telecom equipment exports reaching approximately $17.88 billion (₹1.49 trillion) in 2023–24. Moreover, the government is fostering PPPs to leverage private sector expertise and investment in infrastructure projects. The National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) is introducing a Partial Credit Enhancement Facility to support infrastructure financing through corporate bonds.

Trump’s Tarriff Impact on Three Phase Sectionalizer Industry

The reimplementation or extension of Trump-era tariffs has had a tangible impact on the U.S. electrical equipment sector, including the three-phase sectionalizer industry. These tariffs, primarily targeting imports from China and other key manufacturing countries, have driven the costs for raw materials and intermediate components such as steel, aluminum, insulators, and electronic assemblies used in sectionalizers. Since a large share of these components is typically sourced internationally, manufacturers have been forced to either absorb higher costs or pass them on to utility customers, leading to a surge in overall project costs. As a result, the average unit cost of a three-phase sectionalizer has risen by approximately 12–18% compared to 2023.

U.S. manufacturers relying on global supply chains experienced delays and cost escalations, while firms with localized supply chains gained a temporary advantage, prompting a regional shift in procurement. Utilities and power distribution firms, faced with rising prices, slowed down their investment in smart grid and distribution automation projects, leading to a 6–8% decline in orders for three-phase sectionalizers compared to the previous year.

Government Initiatives and Investments

Government initiatives and investments are playing a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of intelligent sectionalizing equipment, such as three-phase sectionalizers, as part of broader efforts to modernize and enhance the resilience of electrical grids. In the U.S., the Department of Energy (DOE) has been instrumental in this transformation through programs like the Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) and the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP). The SGIG program, for instance, allocated $3.4 billion to support over 100 projects aimed at upgrading the nation’s electric grid. These projects encompassed the deployment of smart meters, automated substations, and advanced sensors, all of which contribute to improved grid reliability and efficiency. The GRIP program further reinforces this commitment by administering $10.5 billion in funding for grid modernization, with $3 billion specifically designated for smart grid projects.

Globally, similar trends are evident. In India, the Ministry of Power has initiated the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Program (R-APDRP), focusing on the implementation of smart metering and grid automation to improve the efficiency and reliability of the power distribution system. Such initiatives not only modernize the grid but also create a conducive environment for the adoption of intelligent sectionalizing equipment.

Growth in Renewable Energy Integration in Asia-Pacific countries

As renewable energy installations proliferate, utilities face challenges in maintaining grid stability and ensuring efficient power distribution. The intermittent nature of renewables necessitates advanced grid infrastructure capable of real-time monitoring and swift fault isolation. Sectionalizers, with their ability to automatically detect and isolate faulty sections of the grid, play a crucial role in minimizing outages and maintaining service continuity. Governments and utilities across the Asia-Pacific are investing in smart grid technologies to address these challenges. For instance, initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid aim to enhance regional interconnectivity, allowing for more efficient energy distribution and better integration of renewable sources. In 2024, China installed an unprecedented 240 GW of solar capacity, elevating its total to over 1 terawatt (TW). This monumental growth underscores China’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and positions it as a global leader in solar energy deployment.

Bargaining Power of Supplier in Three Phase Sectionalizer:

The bargaining power of suppliers in the Three Phase Sectionalizer market has been relatively low. This is primarily due to the abundance of suppliers offering raw materials and components required for manufacturing sectionalizers, which allows buyers to negotiate favorable terms and switch suppliers with minimal cost implications. The availability of similar products and services across different suppliers further diminishes individual supplier leverage. Despite the low bargaining power, suppliers have been actively innovating to maintain competitiveness. For instance, in June 2023, ABB introduced a new line of smart sectionalizers designed to enhance grid reliability through automated fault isolation and restoration processes. These devices integrate with ABB’s digital substation technology, offering real-time monitoring and control capabilities
