New Research Unveils Innovative Technology called Forbrain to Reduce Vocal Fatigue and Enhance Voice Quality.

Published

Reimagine your understanding of vocal fatigue and voice quality with a groundbreaking study. Discover how bone conduction devices like Forbrain® are transforming the lives of professionals who rely on their voices, from teachers to singers and actors.

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois, Sept. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — In a groundbreaking experiment, researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (United States) and %bo Akademi University (Finland) have uncovered an innovative method to reduce vocal fatigue and improve voice production. The results of the study hold the potential to revolutionize how we understand and address voice problems in people who rely on their voice for their job.

“This research shows that these devices will greatly benefit occupational voice users who rely on their voices daily. This technology will be a powerful tool in reducing vocal fatigue and enhancing voice quality for teachers, singers, and even actors”. Dr. Pasquale Bottalico

Vocal fatigue is a common concern for these professionals, and it has been the subject of extensive research. This multi-national study sheds new light on the potential role of bone conduction devices in reducing self-reported vocal fatigue and improving voice quality.

Comparing Two Bone Conduction Devices

The study, led by Charles Nudelman of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, involved twenty participants aged 19 to 33. The participants’ voices were challenged in a vocal loading task while using two types of bone conduction devices. The first device was the Forbrain® device, developed by Sound For Life Limited, which digitally manipulated the speakers’ voices and provided auditory feedback through the bones of the skull. The second was a modified Forbrain® device that offered increased loudness as feedback. A control condition with no device was also included for comparison.

Results That Resonate

The findings were promising. Across all participants, the use of the feedback devices led to significantly lower vocal fatigue compared to the condition with no feedback. Participants consistently rated their fatigue levels lower during tasks with these devices.

Interestingly, the speakers’ voices revealed noteworthy changes in acoustic voice parameters while using the feedback devices, as well.

A Promising Preventative Tool

Previously, a separate study demonstrated the impact of Forbrain on the robustness parameter of the voice. These new findings position the Forbrain® device as a promising tool for mitigating vocal fatigue. Dr. Pasquale Bottalico, the principal investigator of the laboratory, expressed optimism about the implications, stating, “This research shows that these devices will greatly benefit occupational voice users who rely on their voices daily. This technology will be a powerful tool in reducing vocal fatigue and enhancing voice quality for teachers, singers, and even actors.”

The full research study is set to be published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research in the near future.

NASA Welcomes Liechtenstein as Newest Artemis Accords Signatory

Published

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Liechtenstein signed the Artemis Accords Friday during a ceremony hosted by NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, becoming the 52nd nation to commit to the responsible exploration of space for all humanity.

“Today, as Liechtenstein signs the Artemis Accords, we take another step forward together, united by the promise of international cooperation and discovery,” said Melroy. “Liechtenstein’s commitment strengthens our vision, where space is explored with peace, transparency, and sustainability as guiding principles. With each new signatory, the Artemis Accords community adds fresh energy and capabilities to ensure the benefits of space reach the entire world.”

Director of Liechtenstein’s Office for Communications Rainer Schnepfleitner signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of Liechtenstein. The Ambassador of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the United States Georg Sparber and U.S. Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation and the Principality of Liechtenstein Scott Miller also participated in the event.

“With its participation in the Artemis Accords, Liechtenstein looks forward to advancing space exploration among a strong group of like-minded countries committed to the peaceful use of space for the benefit of all humanity,” Sparber said.

The United States, led by NASA and the U.S. Department of State, and seven other initial signatory nations established the Artemis Accords in 2020, identifying a set of principles promoting the beneficial use of space for humanity. Since then, signatories have expanded to represent a quarter of the world’s countries, with 19 countries signing in 2024.

In addition to an increase in numbers, the Artemis Accords signatories, representing every region of the world, continued to build consensus this year and make significant progress in implementing the accords principles.

NASA co-chaired the Artemis Accords Principals’ Meeting in October, which brought together 42 nations and furthered discussions on the safe and responsible use of space. They agreed on recommendations for non-interference, interoperability, release of scientific data, long-term sustainability guidelines, and registration of space objects to advance implementation.

The Artemis Accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other agreements including the Registration Convention, the Rescue and Return Agreement, as well as best practices for responsible behavior that NASA and its partners have supported, including the public release of scientific data.
