Report: AI Could Reshape the US Workforce in 4 Very Different Ways

Published

on

New analysis outlines four potential scenarios for the US labor force and steps business leaders, policymakers, and educators should take now

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — AI is spreading through US workplaces at remarkable speed. A new report from The Conference Board examines how the technology could reshape the US labor force and what leaders can do now to prepare.

The report identifies four potential scenarios:

Gradual augmentation: AI primarily helps workers rather than replaces them.Concentrated gains: AI unevenly boosts productivity for certain industries and occupations.Massive displacement: AI leads to substantial job losses across a broad range of occupations.Uneven disruption: AI displaces workers in certain occupations while supporting job growth in others.

While the long-term effects remain uncertain, the transformation is already underway. Through the end of 2025, about 41% of US workers and 18% of US firms reported using AI, and The Conference Board projects that within three years, 60–70% of jobs in the cognitive workforce could involve collaboration between humans and AI, compared with just 15–25% involving human-only work. Yet despite AI’s rapid adoption and demonstrated productivity gains in some settings, broad effects on employment and wages have so far been limited and difficult to measure.

Given the speed of adoption, the report urges business leaders, policymakers, and educators to prepare now by strengthening workforce skills, improving data and early-warning indicators, and ensuring public systems can respond if displacement accelerates.

“AI is advancing too quickly for business leaders and policymakers to wait until its labor-market effects become clear,” said David K. Young, President of The CEO Center at The Conference Board. “The challenge is not to predict with certainty whether AI will create jobs, eliminate them, or fundamentally change how they are performed. It is to prepare for each possibility. That means better data, stronger workforce training, and systems that can respond quickly if disruption accelerates.”

Recommendations
While the labor market effects of AI are uncertain, waiting to take action until the outlook is clear could leave policymakers and CEOs ill-prepared to respond to quickly changing conditions. As a result, stakeholders should take steps now to prepare workers to take advantage of potential opportunities and remain resilient against potential disruptions.

Improve data collection and establish early-warning indicators: Recognizing that many existing datasets may not capture the effects of AI quickly or granularly enough to aid decision-making, policymakers should take steps to improve data collection.
Invest in worker training and education: AI will change the skills required in existing jobs, as well as the mix of occupations demanded by employers. Given the pace of change, education and training systems must become more responsive to technological advances and shifting employment conditions, requiring action from policymakers, educators, and CEOs.
Modernize unemployment insurance and public-benefit systems: Even a concentrated or temporary increase in displacement could strain unemployment insurance and other public-benefit programs. Policymakers should improve these systems before a major shock occurs rather than attempting to build capacity during a crisis.

GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 16, 2026 /CNW/ — Today, the CRTC is improving the Broadband Fund to help protect Canadians from Internet and cellphone service outages.

Through the Broadband Fund, the CRTC contributes to a broad effort by federal, provincial, and territorial governments to connect underserved rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Canada. To date, the CRTC has helped improve high-speed Internet and cellphone services in more than 320 communities — including 135 Indigenous communities — connecting essential institutions such as schools, health care facilities, and community centres.

Outages can have harmful effects on people, especially when they cannot connect to emergency services in times of need. Following a broad public consultation, the Broadband Fund will now support projects that reduce the risk and impact of outages. These projects will help make Internet and cellphone services more reliable, including during severe weather and other emergencies.

Today’s decision is part of the CRTC’s ongoing work to improve the Broadband Fund and make it faster and easier to get Canadians connected to reliable Internet and cellphone services.

FlexXray Releases Third Annual Benchmark Report on Foreign Material Contamination in Food Manufacturing

Published

By

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — FlexXray, the leader in foreign material inspection services for the food industry, today announced the release of the 2026 Foreign Material Contamination in Food Benchmark Report. Now in its third year, the report is based on survey responses from more than 170 food safety and manufacturing professionals across North America, offering an ongoing, data-driven look into how the industry identifies, manages, and protects against foreign material contamination in their products.

This year’s findings point to a widening gap between what food manufacturers are most likely to encounter and what their detection equipment is built to catch. Key findings include:

A shift in the contamination profile — Plastic has overtaken metal as the most frequently reported contaminant, cited by 37% of respondentsInternal response remains the default — 63% of producers still rely on in-house resources to manage a foreign material eventInvestment cooling, not closing the gap — The share of producers planning to increase detection investment fell from roughly 70% in 2025 to 57% in 2026, while confidence that in-line equipment catches all foreign material has remained flat

“For three years now, this report has given food safety and manufacturing leaders real industry data to benchmark their own programs against,” said Kurt Westmoreland, Chief Commercial Officer. “This year’s findings cover how often facilities are dealing with foreign material events, how confident they are in their detection equipment, how they’re investing, and how they respond when an event happens — giving teams a clear picture of where they stand relative to the rest of the industry.”
