Hammerspace and Mathematic Studios Recognized by MovieLabs for Solving Most Difficult Media Workflow Challenges

MovieLabs case study highlights how Mathematic Studios reduced carbon footprint, increased productivity and enabled global collaboration with Hammerspace.

SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Hammerspace, the company orchestrating the next data cycle, is pleased to showcase the MovieLabs® 2030 case study, highlighting how its customer, Mathematic Studios of Paris, France, leverages the Hammerspace Global Data Platform to achieve multi-site collaborative workflows.

“Now (with Hammerspace), talent at any location can collaborate on the same project wherever they are, leveraging resources that may be anywhere.” ~ Clement Germain, VFX Supervisor, Lead Flame Artist and On Set Supervisor at Mathematic Studio

In the summer of 2019, MovieLabs, on behalf of its member studios, published a whitepaper called “The Evolution of Media Creation,” which laid out a bold 10-year vision for the adoption of new technologies to aid in content production, post and VFX. The paper, often referred to as the “2030 Vision,” has now been broadly adopted by many partner companies and is accepted as the media industry’s “north star” for guiding production technologies toward a shared goal.

The 10 Principles of the 2030 Vision for media creation, put together by the member studios (Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios, Walt Disney Pictures and Television, and Warner Bros. Entertainment), put forth a bold challenge that asked technologists to align future product development with a set of principles to streamline creative workflows across increasingly distributed and often siloed infrastructure choices.

Hammerspace is committed to providing the technology to help the creative industry continue to advance and deliver the richest entertainment experiences possible. Media creation pipelines rely increasingly on collaborative multi-site workflows, which often get bogged down bridging storage silos across multiple locations (public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud deployments).

Mathematic Studios is a creative VFX, animation and motion design studio with more than 350 artists across four locations in France, the U.S. and Canada. Mathematic Studios worked with Hammerspace to transform the sites into a single, unified online production environment. Despite each site having different storage types and infrastructure, Hammerspace software was able to unify all data in existing storage locations in a cross-platform, multi-site global file system. The Hammerspace deployment enabled Mathematic Studios to implement new collaborative workflows quickly to increase production capacity. In addition, the ability to repatriate render jobs transparently back to Paris created significant financial advantages, enabling Mathematic to decarbonize 80% or more of its renders. These advantages demonstrate the efficiencies to be gained from solutions that apply the principles of the MovieLabs 2030 Vision to production workflows.

From MovieLabs perspective, as shared in its recent case study, “Principles 1 (assets go straight to the cloud) and 2 (applications come to the assets) of the MovieLabs 2030 Vision sound simple, and yet the considerable complexity underlying both principles makes them perhaps the hardest to deploy at scale. This case study demonstrates one approach to that problem and shows the value of a policy-driven distributed file system providing scalable access to assets without creating unmanaged copies.”

Mathematic saw immediate improvement after installing Hammerspace, more than doubling its production capacity with the same resources. This approach enabled it to take on additional projects that would have been impossible before. According to Clement Germain, VFX Supervisor, Lead Flame Artist and On Set Supervisor at Mathematic Studio, “Before Hammerspace, one project was on one main site, and we were just sharing some assets or shots with the other sites (Montreal or Los Angeles). Now, talent at any location can collaborate on the same project wherever they are, leveraging resources that may be anywhere”.

Dr. van Belle to guide scientific exploration and foster innovation in the next era of astronomical research

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Jan. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Lowell Observatory is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gerard van Belle as the new Director of Science. Van Belle, who has been an astronomer at the observatory since 2011, has been serving as the interim Director of Science.

In his new role, van Belle will lead a diverse team of astronomers and planetary scientists. He will spearhead the observatory’s new Science Vision, which focuses on advancing research capabilities and implementing cutting-edge technological improvements supporting Lowell’s leadership in astronomical research.

Under his leadership, the science department will continue to advance Lowell Observatory’s mission to pursue the study of astronomy, including the study of our solar system and its evolution, and to conduct pure research in astrophysical phenomena.

Van Belle’s own research focuses on fundamental stellar parameters, including the sizes, shapes, masses, distances, and temperatures of various types of stars. He is also renowned for his expertise in optical and near-infrared astronomical interferometry.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Whitman College in 1990, followed by a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1993, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wyoming in 1996.

Throughout his career, van Belle has been instrumental in the development and commissioning of major optical interferometers worldwide, including the Palomar Testbed Interferometer, the Keck Interferometer, and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. His pioneering work in stellar surface imaging earned him the inaugural Edward Stone Award for Outstanding Research Publication at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2002.

In 2011, van Belle joined Lowell Observatory’s science staff, where he applied high-resolution astronomical techniques to detect nearby exoplanets and map stellar surfaces. He served as the Director of the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) in Flagstaff, Arizona, from 2017 to 2018, and subsequently as its Chief Scientist until 2022.

Notably, van Belle was among the astronomers who voted against the definition of ‘planet’ advanced during the 2006 International Astronomical Union (IAU) conference in Prague, which relegated Pluto to being a ‘dwarf planet’ (which according to the IAU resolution is not a planet).

His extensive experience and dedication to advancing astronomical research make him a valuable leader for Lowell Observatory’s scientific endeavors.

“I am honored to take on this role at such a pivotal time for Lowell Observatory,” said van Belle. “Our Science Vision will guide us in exploring new frontiers in astronomy while strengthening our commitment to public engagement and education.”

Executive Director Dr. Amanda Bosh expressed her confidence in van Belle’s leadership: “Gerard’s extensive experience and dedication to our mission make him the ideal person to lead our scientific endeavors. I look forward to working closely with him as we embark on this exciting new chapter for Lowell Observatory.”
